# Time zone converter

> A time zone converter translates a clock time in one part of the world to the equivalent time in another, accounting for the UTC offset difference between the two zones.

Convert a time from one world time zone to another. Supports 18 common zones including US, Europe, Asia, and Pacific.

**Interactive version:** https://onlinecalculator.me/date-time/time-zone-converter/
**Category:** Date & Time

## How to use

1. Pick the **From** zone (where the time is now) and the **To** zone (where you want to know it).
2. Enter a **date** and **time**.
3. The equivalent local time in the destination zone appears instantly, including any date change.

## How time zone conversion works

Every time zone has a fixed offset from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). To convert between any two zones, translate through UTC:

```
UTC time          = Local time − UTC offset
Target local time = UTC time + Target offset
```

## Common UTC offsets (standard time)

| Zone | Cities | Offset |
|---|---|---|
| PST | Los Angeles, Vancouver | UTC−8 |
| MST | Denver, Phoenix | UTC−7 |
| CST | Chicago, Mexico City | UTC−6 |
| EST | New York, Toronto | UTC−5 |
| UTC / GMT | London (winter), Reykjavik | UTC+0 |
| CET | Berlin, Paris, Madrid | UTC+1 |
| EET | Athens, Helsinki, Kyiv | UTC+2 |
| MSK | Moscow, Istanbul | UTC+3 |
| GST | Dubai, Abu Dhabi | UTC+4 |
| IST | Mumbai, Delhi | UTC+5:30 |
| CST (China) | Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong | UTC+8 |
| JST | Tokyo, Seoul | UTC+9 |
| AEST | Sydney, Melbourne | UTC+10 |
| NZST | Auckland | UTC+12 |

## Worked examples

### 3:00 PM New York to Tokyo

- UTC = 15:00 − (−5) = **20:00 UTC**
- Tokyo = 20:00 + 9 = **05:00 the next day**

### 9:00 AM London (UTC+0) to San Francisco (UTC−8)

- UTC = 09:00 − 0 = 09:00 UTC
- San Francisco = 09:00 + (−8) = **01:00 the same day**

### 11:30 PM Berlin (UTC+1) to Sydney (UTC+10)

- UTC = 23:30 − 1 = 22:30 UTC
- Sydney = 22:30 + 10 = **08:30 the next day**

## Notes

- **Daylight saving time** — this calculator uses standard (winter) offsets. Most of the U.S., Europe, and parts of the Southern Hemisphere shift their clocks by one hour in summer, creating a temporary offset. Dates fall between DST boundaries matter: mid-March to early November the U.S. and Europe are one hour ahead of what the tables show. For real-time DST-aware conversion, use your device's world clock.
- **India, China, and most of Asia** don't observe DST; their offset is year-round.
- **UTC vs. GMT** — in everyday use they're interchangeable. Technically GMT is a time zone (London's winter time), while UTC is the global time standard. Servers and aviation use UTC; news and casual use stick with GMT.
- **Half-hour and 45-minute offsets** exist — India (UTC+5:30), Newfoundland (UTC−3:30), Nepal (UTC+5:45) — make sure you're picking the right zone, not just the nearest round hour.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why might the date change?

If the offset difference carries the clock past midnight, the converted time is on the next or previous day.

### Does this account for daylight saving time?

This calculator uses standard (winter) UTC offsets. DST adds +1 hour to most US and European zones in summer. For real-time DST-aware conversion, use your device's world clock.

### What is UTC?

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the global time reference. All other zones are expressed as UTC offset — for example, New York is UTC−5 in winter (EST) and UTC−4 in summer (EDT).

### What is the difference between EST and EDT?

EST (Eastern Standard Time) is UTC−5, used in winter. EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) is UTC−4, used in summer. This calculator shows standard offsets.
