2. Verify your total sleep needs

A standard sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes. During that time, your brain moves through three distinct stages: light sleep, deep (slow-wave) sleep, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.

Most adults need five to six complete cycles per night to physically and mentally recover. Five cycles equals exactly 7.5 hours of sleep. Six cycles gives you 9 hours. 4. Beware of sleep inertia

The entire point of timing your sleep cycles is to avoid sleep inertia. This is the heavy, disoriented, and groggy state that hits you when an alarm jolts you awake during deep sleep or REM.

Understanding sleep inertia explains why sleeping for exactly eight hours often feels worse than sleeping for seven and a half. Eight hours is 480 minutes. If you calculate 480 ÷ 90, you get 5.33 cycles. At the eight-hour mark, you are 30 minutes into a brand new cycle, right as your brain is dropping back into deep, slow-wave sleep. Waking up at seven and a half hours means you wake up at the natural peak of cycle number five. Your body is already preparing to wake up, so the alarm feels like a gentle nudge rather than a shock to the system.

If the math suggests a bedtime that gives you slightly less total time in bed than you initially planned, trust the cycles.

5. Choose the right anchor for your schedule

You generally have two ways to calculate your schedule: working backward from a fixed wake time, or working forward from a fixed bedtime.
