About this calculator

How to use

  1. Enter a start date and an end date.

How business days are counted

The calculator loops through each calendar day from the start date up to (but not including) the end date. Each day is checked: if it falls on Monday through Friday it is counted as a business day; Saturday and Sunday are counted as weekend days. The sum of business days and weekend days always equals the total calendar days.

Worked example

From April 1, 2025 to April 30, 2025 (29 calendar days):

  • Calendar days: 29
  • Weekend days: 8 (four Saturdays, four Sundays — April has four full weekends in this span)
  • Business days: 21

Notes

  • Public holidays are not excluded. Subtract known holidays from the business days count manually.
  • The end date is excluded from the count (same convention as Python’s range() or Excel’s NETWORKDAYS with an adjusted end).
  • For adding or subtracting a number of business days from a date, see the Add or Subtract Days Calculator.
What counts as a business day?
Any weekday — Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. Saturday and Sunday are always excluded. Public holidays are not excluded because they vary by country and employer; subtract your own holidays from the result manually.
Is the start date or end date included in the count?
The calculator counts from the start date up to but not including the end date, matching the convention used in most scheduling and legal contexts.
Why do business days matter?
Many deadlines — legal filings, payment processing, shipping estimates, project sprints — are quoted in business days rather than calendar days. Knowing the exact count helps you plan accurately.
Can I calculate business days in the past?
Yes. Enter any two valid dates in either order. If the end date is before the start date, the counts are still shown as positive numbers (the absolute value).
How do I calculate remaining business days in the year?
Press "Through year end" to set the end date to December 31 of the current year, then read the business days result.
