- Enter the age in years.
- Click Calculate.
- Read the equivalent age and the cat’s life stage.
Formula
Cat → Human
age < 1 yr: human age = cat age × 15
age = 1 yr: human age = 15
1 < age < 2: human age = 15 + (cat age − 1) × 9
age ≥ 2: human age = 24 + (cat age − 2) × 4
Human → Cat (inverse)
human < 15: cat age = human age / 15
15 ≤ human < 24: cat age = 1 + (human age − 15) / 9
human ≥ 24: cat age = 2 + (human age − 24) / 4
Life stages:
Kitten: 0–1 yr
Junior: 1–2 yr
Prime: 3–6 yr
Mature: 7–10 yr
Senior: 11–14 yr
Geriatric: 15+ yr
Worked example
5-year-old cat:
human age = 24 + (5 − 2) × 4
= 24 + 12
= 36 human years
life stage = Prime
Notes
- Cat age conversion is an approximation. Individual cats age at different rates depending on breed, diet, indoor versus outdoor lifestyle, and veterinary care.
- Consult your vet for a health assessment rather than relying solely on age equivalency.

Frequently asked
How old is a 1-year-old cat in human years?
A 1-year-old cat is equivalent to about 15 human years. Cats mature rapidly in the first year, reaching sexual maturity and full adult size.
How old is a 5-year-old cat in human years?
A 5-year-old cat is equivalent to about 36 human years: 24 (for the first 2 years) plus 3 × 4 = 12 for years 3–5. A 5-year-old cat is in its prime life stage.
What life stages do cats have?
International Cat Care recognises six life stages: Kitten (0–1 yr), Junior (1–2 yr), Prime (3–6 yr), Mature (7–10 yr), Senior (11–14 yr), and Geriatric (15 yr+).
Is the 7-times rule accurate for cats?
No. The popular rule that multiplies pet age by 7 does not match how cats actually age. Cats mature far faster in the first two years than humans, so a simple multiplier underestimates early ages. The ICC/FAB formula used here is more accurate.
How old is the oldest cat on record?
Creme Puff of Austin, Texas, lived to 38 years and 3 days — equivalent to roughly 168 human years by this formula. Most indoor domestic cats live 12–18 years.
