Conversion factors (relative to Newton)

UnitNewton equivalent
Newton (N)1
Kilonewton (kN)1 000
Millinewton (mN)0.001
Pound-force (lbf)4.44822
Kilogram-force (kgf)9.80665
Ounce-force (ozf)0.278014
Dyne (dyn)0.00001
Kilopound-force (kip)4 448.22

Worked example

A typical car engine produces about 200 lbf of thrust at idle.

Converting to Newtons: 200 × 4.44822 = 889.6 N

Converting to kgf: 889.6 ÷ 9.80665 ≈ 90.7 kgf

Notes

  • Newton (N) is the SI unit of force: 1 N = 1 kg·m/s².
  • Kilogram-force (kgf) is sometimes called “kilopond” (kp) in older European texts.
  • Conversion factors follow NIST Guide to the SI (2008), Appendix B.
How does the force converter work?
Every unit is first converted to the base unit (Newton) by multiplying by a fixed factor, then divided by the target unit's factor to get the result.
What is the difference between Newton and kilogram-force?
A Newton (N) is the SI unit of force. One kilogram-force (kgf) equals the force exerted by gravity on a 1 kg mass, which is 9.80665 N.
What is a pound-force?
A pound-force (lbf) is the force exerted by gravity on a 1 pound mass under standard gravity. One lbf equals approximately 4.44822 N.
What is a dyne?
A dyne is the CGS unit of force. One dyne equals 10⁻⁵ Newtons, or 0.00001 N.
What units are supported?
Newton (N), kilonewton (kN), millinewton (mN), pound-force (lbf), kilogram-force (kgf), ounce-force (ozf), dyne (dyn), and kilopound-force (kip).
