How it works
- Tip amount = bill × (tip% ÷ 100)
- Total = bill + tip amount
- Per person = total ÷ number of people
Worked example
$100 bill, 20% tip, 4 people:
- Tip = 100 × 0.20 = $20
- Total = 100 + 20 = $120
- Per person = 120 ÷ 4 = $30 (of which $5 is tip)
Notes
This calculator assumes an even split. In practice, people often round up to the nearest dollar per person to avoid dealing with coins — rounding each person’s share up by $0.50–$1 is a common convention that slightly over-tips, which is usually welcome.
