- Choose your cooking method: oven, grill, or slow cooker.
- Select the desired doneness for meats.
- Click Calculate and read the cooking time and temperature.
Formulas
For weight-based foods:
cooking time (min) = minutes per pound × weight (lbs)
Flat-time foods (casserole, bread, cookies, cake) use a fixed range regardless of weight.
Slow cooker multiplier: approximately 2× oven time.
Grill adjustment: approximately 0.9× oven time (10% faster for meats).
Worked example
4 lb whole chicken in the oven:
time = 20 min/lb × 4 lb = 80 min (1:20)
temperature = 375°F
servings ≈ 4 × 2 = 8
12 lb turkey:
time = 15 min/lb × 12 lb = 180 min (3:00)
temperature = 325°F
Notes
- Always verify doneness with a meat thermometer. Cooking times are estimates — oven calibration, starting temperature, and pan type all affect the result.
- Rest large roasts and whole poultry before carving. This lets internal juices redistribute.
- Stuffed poultry takes longer than unstuffed because the stuffing must also reach a safe temperature.
Frequently asked
How long do I cook a whole chicken per pound?
A whole chicken roasts at 375°F for about 20 minutes per pound. A 4-pound bird takes roughly 80 minutes. Always verify with a meat thermometer — the thigh should reach 165°F.
How long does a turkey take to cook?
An unstuffed turkey roasts at 325°F for approximately 15 minutes per pound. A 12-pound bird takes about 3 hours. Add 5 minutes per pound for a stuffed turkey. Internal temperature must reach 165°F in the thigh.
How do I know when beef roast is done?
Use a meat thermometer: rare = 125°F, medium-rare = 135°F, medium = 145°F, well-done = 160°F. Rest the roast 15–20 minutes before carving so juices redistribute.
Why does slow cooker take twice as long?
Slow cookers run at much lower temperatures (around 190–210°F on low) compared to a 325–375°F oven. The extended time allows collagen in tougher cuts to break down into gelatin, which makes meat tender.
How are servings estimated?
The calculator uses 0.5 lb of meat per serving as a rough guide. Bone-in cuts have less usable meat, so plan for 0.75–1 lb per person for bone-in roasts.
