Conversion factors (relative to m/s²)
| Unit | m/s² equivalent |
|---|---|
| m/s² | 1 |
| ft/s² | 0.3048 |
| Standard gravity (g) | 9.80665 |
| Galileo (Gal) | 0.01 |
| km/h per second | 0.277778 |
| mi/h per second | 0.44704 |
| in/s² | 0.0254 |
| cm/s² | 0.01 |
Worked example
A sports car accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds, reaching 60 mi/h·s.
Actually, 60 mph in 3 s = 20 mph/s average acceleration.
Converting to m/s²: 20 × 0.44704 = 8.94 m/s²
Converting to g: 8.94 ÷ 9.80665 ≈ 0.91 g
Notes
- Standard gravity (g) is exactly 9.80665 m/s² by BIPM definition (9th SI Brochure, 2019).
- Galileo (Gal) and cm/s² are equivalent units; both equal 0.01 m/s².
- km/h/s is useful for expressing vehicle acceleration in familiar speed units.
