How sizing systems are defined

US — women’s sizes are roughly historical based on bust/waist inch measurements with “vanity sizing” drift over decades. What was a “size 10” in 1970 is roughly a “size 6” today.

UK — women’s sizes are 4 higher than the equivalent US size for most brands (US 8 ≈ UK 12).

EU — the most physical system: women’s sizes approximate bust measurement in centimeters (EU 40 ≈ 80 cm bust). Men’s jacket sizes = chest (cm) ÷ 2.

IT — Italian women’s tops follow EU but use 4 higher (EU 40 = IT 44). Italian men’s sizes often mirror EU.

FR — French women’s tops run 2 higher than EU (EU 40 = FR 42).

AU — Australian women’s sizes mirror UK (which is 4 higher than US).

Why fit varies by brand

International size charts are guidelines, not enforced standards. Fit drifts between brands for three reasons:

  1. Vanity sizing — luxury and premium brands label generously (“a size 4 at Brand X is a size 8 at Brand Y”).
  2. Target demographic — sportswear runs athletic-fit (narrower at the waist); workwear runs boxy (wider).
  3. Country of origin — a European-origin brand using EU sizes often fits narrower in the shoulders than a US-origin brand using US sizes.

When buying online, check the brand’s own size guide — in inches or centimeters, not just the letter — and compare to a garment you already own that fits well.

Notes

  • Size charts follow international standard guidelines. Real fit varies by brand and cut.
  • French (FR) women’s sizes are 2 higher than EU sizes as a rule of thumb.
  • Italian (IT) women’s sizes are 4 higher than EU sizes.
  • Australian sizes typically mirror US sizes for women’s tops, but UK for women’s dresses.
  • For a guaranteed fit, nothing beats measuring a garment you own and comparing its dimensions to the online size chart.
How do US and EU women's top sizes compare?
A US medium (M) is roughly EU 40–42, UK 12–14, and FR 42–44. The converter shows all equivalents from a standard size chart.
How are men's EU sizes determined?
European men's clothing sizes for tops are based on chest measurement in centimeters. EU 48 corresponds to a 38–40 inch chest (US Medium).
How do I convert men's pants sizes to EU?
Enter your waist measurement in inches. The converter multiplies by 2.54 to give the EU waist size in centimeters.
Why do sizes vary between brands?
International size charts are guidelines, not binding standards. Actual fit depends on the brand's specific measurements. Always check individual brand size guides when possible.
What garment types are covered?
Women's tops, men's tops, women's pants (US dress sizes), men's pants (waist in inches), and women's dresses.
