How shoe sizes are defined

US Men’s: Barleycorns above a “last” of 4 inches. Size 1 = 7⅔ inches; each full size adds ⅓ inch.

US Women’s: Same scale as US Men’s but offset by 1.5 sizes (women’s 9 = men’s 7.5).

UK: One Barleycorn less than US Men’s for the same foot length.

EU: Based on Paris points — each point = ⅔ cm. One EU size = ⅔ cm of foot length.

CM / JP: Direct foot length measurement in centimeters, rounded to the nearest 0.5 cm.

Notes

  • Size lookup uses the Brannock Device standard, widely used in US retail.
  • Half sizes are supported for all systems where applicable.
  • Sizing can vary slightly between brands — use this as a starting point, not a guarantee.
How do men's and women's US shoe sizes compare?
US women's sizes are approximately 1.5 sizes larger than men's. A US Men's 9 equals a US Women's 10.5.
What is EU shoe sizing based on?
EU sizes are based on Paris points, each equal to two-thirds of a centimeter. EU 42 corresponds roughly to a foot length of 26.7 cm (US Men's 9).
What is the difference between CM and JP sizing?
CM sizing measures the foot length in centimeters. JP sizing is nearly identical but rounded slightly differently — both are based on the actual foot length, making them the most direct sizing systems.
Why does the converter use a lookup table instead of a formula?
Shoe size relationships are not perfectly linear across brands and manufacturing traditions. A lookup table using the Brannock Device standard gives more accurate results than a formula.
What sizes are covered?
US Men's 4–16 (0.5 increments) and the equivalent sizes in all other systems.
